After reading commentary at Notes From A Different Kitchen, I decided to also comment on my initial reaction to The Blueprint 3. This is more of a response, so read that post first.
First off, I love the album after a few listens and I'm actually glad Jay's TRYING to open himself up a bit. And I do agree, Grizzly Bear and Empire of the Sun may be a bit of indie cop outs due to how popular each one is in their own right.
BUT, what I really enjoyed reading was Hov's discussion about how he's trying to get the community of hip-hop artists AS A WHOLE to step their game up with new sounds and experimental ideas (like a few are already doing). Can't find the exact quote I'm referencing, but one part of the interview is here. I can definitely see value in his statements that certain indie bands like MGMT are stealing music heads AWAY from hip-hop, and hip-hop needs to keep movin and shakin to keep things interested and gaining new fans.
I do agree with NFADK's point about HE'S not the one who should be rhymin over these beats, but I see it as he's doin it as a leader in the genre that many up-n-comin artists try to mimick every single day.
More critique to come on individual tracks, as there's some good stuff to talk about here..
